What "balanced chakras" means

In the yoga and tantric traditions, the chakras are seven energy centres along your spine, from the root at the base to the crown at the top. Chakra balancing is the idea that each one should be open and flowing, not stuck (blocked) and not too loud (overactive).

In real life, it looks like this: you check in with each part of your life the chakras stand for, notice which one feels off, and give it a little attention with breath, movement, sound or a small real-world action.

You don't have to believe energy is literally spinning in your belly for this to be useful. As a map for checking in with yourself, it's honestly so good.

Step 1: check in

Before you balance anything, figure out where you are. Two ways:

  • Take the chakra test. Eight questions, and it points you at one chakra to start with.
  • Ask yourself seven questions, one per chakra, and answer 1 to 5:
Chakra Ask yourself If it feels low
Root Do I feel safe and steady? Anxious, scattered, ungrounded
Sacral Am I letting myself enjoy things? Flat, uncreative, no fun
Solar plexus Do I trust my own decisions? People-pleasing, stuck, unsure
Heart Am I letting people in? Closed off, resentful, lonely
Throat Am I saying what I mean? Holding things in, oversharing
Third eye Do I trust my gut? Foggy, overthinking
Crown Do I feel connected to something bigger? Cut off, cynical, doomscrolling

The lowest number is where you start. If they're all fine, um, love that for you. Do the daily balance anyway.

Step 2: one practice per chakra

These are the classic tools: breath, movement, sound and doing the thing the chakra is about. Pick the one for your chakra and do it today.

  • Root: a slow five-minute walk, feeling each foot land. Then chant LAM.
  • Sacral: hip circles, ten each way, slow like stirring honey. Then an hour of making something just for fun.
  • Solar plexus: say no to one thing you'd usually say yes to out of guilt. Then chant RAM.
  • Heart: a one-minute chest opener. Then text someone one specific thing you love about them.
  • Throat: two minutes of humming bee breath. Then sing one whole song out loud.
  • Third eye: five rounds of alternate nostril breathing. Then chant OM.
  • Crown: sit in silence for a few minutes. Then keep your first twenty minutes tomorrow phone-free.

A five-minute grounding walk

Walk slowly for five minutes, phone in your pocket. Feel each foot land: heel, ball, toes. Barefoot on grass or sand if you can. Root chakra, but make it a stroll.

Practice

Move·Easy·+3

Two minutes of hip circles

Sit cross-legged, hands on your knees, and circle your torso slowly over your hips: ten one way, ten the other. Big, slow, like stirring honey.

Practice

Two minutes of bee breath

Breathe in through your nose, then hum on a long exhale with your mouth closed, like a bee. Optional: press your ear flaps closed with your index fingers. Two minutes.

Step 3: a 10-minute daily balance

This one touches all seven, so it's the one to keep when you don't know where to start.

  1. Sit tall on a cushion or a chair. Hands on your knees.
  2. Breathe slowly for 2 minutes: in for 5, out for 5.
  3. Climb the bija ladder: chant each seed sound three times, root to crown: LAM, VAM, RAM, YAM, HAM, OM. Let your voice float a little higher as you go up.
  4. Picture the colours as you go: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. (Fun fact: the rainbow colours are a 20th-century Western addition, more in chakra colours.)
  5. Sit in silence for 2 minutes at the crown.
  6. Ground back down: press your feet into the floor and take three slow breaths into your belly.

Climb the bija ladder

Chant each chakra's seed sound three times, root to crown: LAM, VAM, RAM, YAM, HAM, OM, then sit in silence for a minute. Let your voice get higher as you go up.

Daily chakra balance

10:00

10 minutes, with a soft chime at the end.

Step 4: a 7-day plan

One chakra a day, root to crown, about ten minutes each. That's literally what our free 7-Day Chakra Challenge is: breath, a little movement, one mantra and one journal prompt per day, with the practices counted on your Glow Meter.

After the week, take the chakra test again and see what shifted.

Tips that actually help

  • Start at the root. Most traditions work from the bottom up. A wobbly root makes everything else wobbly.
  • Balance the top with the bottom. Lots of crown and third eye work? Follow it with something grounding, like a walk or a big meal.
  • Don't chase "fully open". Balanced means steady, not all seven blasting at max.
  • Real life counts. Sleep, food, friends and saying what you mean are chakra work too.

What the evidence says

Chakras aren't physical organs, and there's no scientific way to measure whether one is "blocked". The chakra system is a spiritual map, not anatomy.

The practices inside it are a different story. Slow breathing, like the 5-and-5 breath above, has been linked with changes in heart rate variability and feeling calmer and more relaxed in a review of studies on healthy people. Meditation programmes have small to moderate effects on anxiety and low mood. So the tools can feel genuinely good, whatever you believe about the energy.

If a "blocked chakra" feels like constant anxiety, low mood, pain or exhaustion, please see a doctor too. Those signs overlap with things that need real care, and getting that care is part of balance.

FAQ

How do you balance your chakras?

Check in with each chakra (the chakra test helps), then use a simple practice for the one that feels off: slow breathing, a movement, its seed mantra, and a small real-life action linked to what it stands for.

How long does it take to balance chakras?

There's no set time. Many people like a daily 10-minute practice, or one chakra a day for a week, and then a weekly check-in.

Which chakra should I balance first?

The root chakra is the traditional starting point, because the system builds from the bottom up. Or start with whichever one scores lowest when you check in.

Can you balance all 7 chakras at once?

Yes. A short practice like the bija ladder, chanting LAM, VAM, RAM, YAM, HAM and OM, touches all seven in a few minutes.
