What a kundalini awakening is
In the yoga traditions, a kundalini awakening is when the energy at the base of your spine (the kundalini) wakes up and starts to rise through your chakras.
For some people it happens slowly, over years of practice. For others it's sudden, sometimes during meditation, breathwork or a big life moment. It's described as anything from a soft, glowy shift to an intense, life-changing experience.
We're all about the soft version here. Gently, babe. Always gently.
Signs of a kundalini awakening
People who describe a kundalini awakening often mention things like:
- Tingling or warmth moving up the spine, or a buzzing feeling
- Waves of emotion, like crying for no reason, or sudden joy
- Changes in sleep and dreams, often more vivid dreams
- Feeling super sensitive to noise, people, food or energy
- Bursts of creativity and inspiration
- A sense of connection, like everything is one big cosmic group chat
- Spontaneous movements during meditation, like swaying or shaking
- Letting go of old habits, relationships or ways of seeing yourself
None of these mean anything is wrong, and none of them are required. A lot of people simply feel calmer and more themselves.
Gentle vs overwhelming
The traditions themselves warn that pushing too hard, too fast can be a lot. Some people describe what's sometimes called a spiritual emergency, or "kundalini syndrome": feeling flooded and out of control.
Here's the line we draw. Things that feel tender but manageable are part of the ride. Things like these mean stop and get support:
- panic attacks or constant anxiety
- not sleeping for days
- feeling detached from reality, or like you're not real
- physical symptoms like chest pain, a racing heart or severe headaches
If any of those show up, pause intense practice completely, ground yourself, and talk to a doctor or a mental health professional. That isn't failing at spirituality. That's taking care of the body the whole practice lives in.
How to awaken kundalini gently
Kundalini yoga is designed to wake this energy slowly and safely. The gentle path looks like:
- Start at the root. Grounding practices first. A steady root chakra is your safety net.
- Breathe slowly. Long deep breathing before any fast breathing.
- Keep it short. Three minutes, a few times a week. Then build.
- Move your spine. Spinal flexes and cat-cow keep the energy moving smoothly.
- Ground afterwards. Eat something, walk outside, touch your feet.
Slow, grounding breath
breathe in 5 · breathe out 5
Ready when you are
Practice
Three minutes of long deep breathing
Slow breaths through the nose: fill the belly, then the ribs, then the chest, and empty in reverse. Aim for about 5 or 6 breaths a minute. Three minutes on a timer.
How to ground yourself if it feels like a lot
- Stop the practice and breathe normally.
- Put both feet on the floor and press down. Feel your weight.
- Eat something warm and hearty.
- Go for a slow walk outside.
- Hold something cold, like an ice cube or a cold drink.
- Talk to someone you trust.
Practice
A five-minute grounding walk
Walk slowly for five minutes, phone in your pocket. Feel each foot land: heel, ball, toes. Barefoot on grass or sand if you can. Root chakra, but make it a stroll.
