Kundalini, in one breath
Kundalini is a Sanskrit word that means something like "coiled one". In the tantric and yoga traditions of India, it's a powerful energy said to rest at the base of your spine, curled up like a sleeping serpent, three and a half times around.
The idea is that through breath, movement, mantra and meditation, this energy gently wakes up and rises through the chakras, all the way to the crown. That rising is what people mean by a kundalini awakening.
You don't need to believe it literally to enjoy the practice. But it's honestly such a beautiful image: there's energy inside you that's just waiting to wake up ✨
Where kundalini comes from
Kundalini shows up in the tantric texts of medieval India and in hatha yoga, including the Hatha Yoga Pradipika, a 15th-century guide to yoga practice. These traditions describe:
- Nadis, energy channels through the body. The three main ones are ida (left), pingala (right) and sushumna (the central channel along the spine).
- Chakras, the energy centres along sushumna.
- Kundalini, the energy at the root that rises up sushumna through each chakra.
Kundalini is also often described as Shakti, the divine feminine energy, rising to meet Shiva, pure consciousness, at the crown. Very romantic. Very cosmic.
What is kundalini yoga?
Kundalini yoga is a style of yoga built around waking up this energy. Compared with the yoga most people know, it uses:
- a lot of breathwork, including breath of fire
- kriyas: set sequences of posture, breath and sound, often held for a few minutes
- mantras: chanting, out loud or silently
- mudras: hand positions
- meditation, often 3, 11 or 31 minutes long
You don't need to be flexible. You need a cushion, a timer and, like, a little patience. The beginner's guide to kundalini yoga walks you through a first practice.
Kundalini energy and the chakras
As kundalini rises, it's said to pass through each chakra in turn, waking it up:
| Chakra | What waking up is said to feel like |
|---|---|
| Root | Feeling safe and grounded |
| Sacral | Creativity and pleasure flowing |
| Solar plexus | Confidence and drive |
| Heart | Love and compassion opening |
| Throat | Speaking more honestly |
| Third eye | Clearer intuition |
| Crown | A sense of connection and peace |
That's why so many kundalini practices start at the base, with grounding and the navel, before moving up.
Go gently
The traditions themselves say kundalini work should be gradual. Intense practice, especially lots of fast breathing or very long meditations, can stir up a lot, emotionally and physically.
Start with a few minutes a day, keep your root grounded, and if you ever feel overwhelmed, scale right back. If symptoms like panic, sleeplessness or feeling detached from reality show up, stop and talk to a doctor or mental health professional. Kundalini is meant to feel like waking up, not falling apart.
A tiny first practice
Sit tall, hands on your knees, and do one minute of spinal flex. It's the classic kundalini warm-up, and it wakes up your spine, which is kundalini's whole highway.
Practice
One minute of spinal flex
Sit cross-legged holding your shins, or on a chair holding your knees. Inhale and arch your chest forward, exhale and round your back. Keep your head level. One minute, nice and smooth.
